London was never a planned city. Its history is disorganised and chaotic, and the mix of old and new is a sight to behold. In a relatively short walk, you'll see Roman ruins, Norman fortresses, medieval gothic, Georgian squares, Victorian elegance and Imperial grandeur. This is the oldest part of London, and also the newest, as it's financial heart of the capital, since the recent change in building law, quirky new skyscrapers are flying upwards at a dramatic rate.
